This setup sound awesome. I have to say I upgraded the speakers and it has taken this system to new level. If you looking for a nice sounding system for a small price this is the one. Keep in mind a good center channel speaker is very important. Because of the arrangement in my room I have a Bose Acoustimass 3 Series IV speaker system in front and Polk Audio RC65i 2-Way in-wall speakers in the back. The center channel speaker is a a Yamaha NS-C225 2-Way Acoustic Suspension center channel speaker. The picture is also great with the upconvert. Save money on new dvds.
So if you want a great, affordable home theater set up for about 6-7 months, this is the one to get. I loved this unit and it went great with our large screen TV we got at the same time -- 7 months later and DVD's pause/skip while you are watching them or sometimes stop altogether, no matter what you do, if DVD is new or not.tried DVD headcleaner disk that cleans the lens, still has the problem. And I noticed others that bought this unit report the same problem - DVD's stop playing after a while and after the 90 day period too, of course. :pBut the audio still works for USB port playing music and the TV. The fault is in the DVD player part which you can also hear at times as it grinds to a halt.I didn't buy this unit through Amazon, just thought I would report my findings.
no in between. have to watch movies with the remote in hand to turn the volume up and down.
played great then all of a sudden stopped playing dvd's. bought this thing 1/09.
sound is terrible, its either to loud or not loud enough. It only plays when it wants to.
try to play dvd's and it says no disc. down during action films and up when people are talking.
my previous dvd player lasted 5 years.this one didn't last 6 months.
I just bought this system last week to replace a Samsung system that "died" on me. The rear speaker wires are too short. Luckily I have a rug that covers part of it.2. I like the preset equalizer settings as it makes it easier for me to switch from one to another depending on what I'm watching. Luckily most DVDs now have English subtitles, but some older ones only have regular closed-captioning like on TV.Other than that, I am really happy with this system. I was also able to hook it up to my cable box/DVR to get 5.1 sound while I watch regular TV. I'm already very impressed. For the left rear speaker, I had to let the wire sit across my living room floor.
I like the "Night" setting as it keeps the dialog hearable but the music/sound effects don't overpower while watching movies at night. I've had my upstairs neighbor come down and ask me to turn the volume down on my old system because it made the walls vibrate when watching a loud action movie like Dark Knight or Pirates of the Carribbean.I only have 2 minor complaints.1. I'm hearing impaired and the DVD player is supposed to be able to read closed-captioning on discs, but for some reason it isn't even though I turned that feature on in the setup/options menu. It even comes with a separate dock for your iPod (works with just about every iPod model out there).
It would have been great if we could have adjusted the sound to the tv correctly with this. I will say that Phillips does have excellent customer service in my experience.just make sure you register this if you buy it. This system was great for loud movies, but forget watching a movie at night with anyone sleeping anywhere near by. There was a horrible echo if the volume on the tv was not all the way off. I purchased this home theater system from a local retailer.exactly one month ago from the date of this review. It had fantastic sound, it really did.if what you wanted was loud with lots of bass at all times. However, you have to exit your movie (etc), and then eject the disk before you do so. The controls were easy to use (I've met some evil DVD player remotes in my day) and all and all I was 100% happy with it.Then.after owning it less than a month and under less than normal useage.it just suddenly stopped reading the dvds. Hooked up with HDMI cables, the picture was fantastic.
I'd recommend the Bravia units over this if you are wanting an Ipod dock. One would assume they would have played nicely with each other. Despite the fact that Phillips insisted that it "should" it would not work well with the sound being on on the TV at all. However, in our case we wound up returning this to the retailer and purchasing a Sony Bravia system instead. Brand new Phillips TV and brand new Phillips Home Theater System. We had to constantly go into the settings and adjust the balance (which could not be done with a disk in for some odd reason) per usage situation.I loved the Ipod dock.three weeks ago I bought an Ipod specifically for this since my other mp3 player obviously would be incompatible. The Bravia charges the Ipod and you can also view song information on the tv with certain systems.something this Philips does not offer.----In response to another review- you can actually manually adjust the sound levels. I still am amazed by how odd and totally unrealistic it is to have to go through this to adjust sound.because when you can't hear it playing you usually have to readjust a few more times.
